FROM JAN 2021 the CAA has introduced a new qualification for Drone Pilots. The A2 Certificate Course. This course allows you to operate your drone in more areas than previously allowed. It is a very simple, eLearning based course with an online test at the end. UAVHUB can help you breeze through this new qualification and get you up and flying with the new regulations. The course is relatively straight-forward, simple and a cheap solution for unlocking the potential of you and your drone in more places across the UK. The A2 Certificate allows you to fly your drone in built-up areas (if you keep a minimum distance of 30m from uninvolved people).

This allows you to fly your drone in:

  • cities
  • parks
  • beaches
  • coastlines

The course is designed to take 4 hours of self-learning and revision delivered via web-based eLearning. After that, there is an online test with the CAA. The test comprises 30 multiple choice questions which you have 75 minutes to answer (in reality the test will only take you 15-20 minutes).

To take the test you will need:

  • a computer with an internet connection
  • webcam
  • microphone

The test is monitored by the CAA to avoid cheating. Some drones now require this qualification. If your drone weighs between 250g – 2Kg then you will need the A2 certificate in order to fly in built-up areas. If you don’t have the A2 Certificate then the minimum distance from uninvolved people increases to 150m.

Popular drones that fall into this category are:

  • DJI Mavic Air/Air2
  • Mavic Pro
  • Phantom

If your drone weighs less than 250g (Mavic Mini) it may still be worth doing the course to develop your knowledge and skills. Also, it would mean if you upgraded your drone later on you are already A2 qualified. Please also remember if your drone weighs less than 250g you still need to obtain a Flyer ID and Operator ID.
